Lahore, 19 May 2024 (WAI): A special flight carrying the first batch of Pakistani students from the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, landed at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport late on Saturday, following disturbing reports of mob violence targeting international students, including Pakistanis.
According to Kyrgyz police, forces were mobilized in Bishkek to quell the violence after hundreds of local men attacked buildings housing international students following a brawl between international and Egyptian students on May 13. Locals allegedly targeted international students living in the aftermath of the altercation, prompting concerns for their safety.
Reports indicate that the violence erupted after a video of the fight with Egyptian nationals went viral on social media, sparking what Kyrgyz media described as a “protest against foreigners.” However, Kyrgyz authorities have assured that the situation is now under control following negotiations with rioters, leading to their dispersal.
The Pakistani embassy in Bishkek confirmed that, although there were no fatalities, five Pakistani students sustained injuries in the violence. They also cited press releases from the Kyrgyz Ministry of Internal Affairs, affirming that the situation has stabilized.

State-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported the safe arrival of the first batch of Pakistani students in Lahore, which Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi received. However, the exact number of students on the flight was ambiguous, with varying figures provided by different sources.
Minister Naqvi assured that transport facilities would be arranged for students returning to other cities, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting Pakistani students abroad. He stated that additional flights were scheduled for Sunday to evacuate more students stranded in Kyrgyzstan.
The evacuation efforts come in response to Prime Minister Shehbaz’s orders to ensure the safety of Pakistani students in Bishkek. Naqvi’s presence at the airport to receive the returning students reflects the government’s proactive stance in addressing and assisting affected students.
