London, 9 April 2024 (WAI):  The United Kingdom is committed to advancing women’s participation in peacebuilding and security efforts. In a recent landmark event, Air Commodore Nicola Thomas, the UK’s Air Attach to the United States, engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on women, peace, and security at the Women’s Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.

The Women, Peace, and Security Agenda

The Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic necessity. Empowered women contribute significantly to more prosperous and secure societies. Recognizing this, the UK government has launched the UK Women, Peace, and Security National Action Plan 2023–2027. This comprehensive plan outlines strategic directions across diplomatic, development, security, and defense efforts.

Key Commitments

Championing Women Leaders: The UK commits to championing and protecting women leaders, humanitarian actors, human rights defenders, and peacebuilders worldwide. Their voices are essential for sustainable peace and prosperity.

Increasing Female Representation: The plan includes expanding female recruitment within the British armed forces and negotiating teams. By doing so, the UK aims to enhance gender diversity and effectiveness in conflict resolution.

Addressing Transnational Threats: For the first time, the UK acknowledges the impact of transnational threats—such as climate change and cybercrime—on women and girls during conflicts.
