Peshawar, 24 March 2024 (WAI): Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce is set to dispatch a high-level delegation to Kabul on Monday to address challenges hindering bilateral trade and to foster enhanced cooperation between the two neighboring nations. Amidst recent border skirmishes and closures impacting trade, the delegation aims to facilitate discussions aimed at restoring trust and ensuring smooth trade flow.
The deteriorating trade relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have led to significant economic losses for both sides, affecting communities and industries reliant on cross-border trade. The upcoming visit, led by the Secretary of Commerce from Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce, signals a commitment to addressing these challenges and finding solutions to enhance trade relations.
Muhammad Zubair Motiwala, CEO of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), highlighted the need for bilateral cooperation to simplify trade procedures, ease restrictions, and facilitate smoother transit at border points. The delegation seeks to engage in confidence-building measures and collaborative efforts to overcome existing hurdles.

Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s commerce ministry, confirmed the scheduled visit while expressing concerns over Pakistan’s alleged complications in trade matters. Discussions will focus on issues such as delays in goods transportation, bureaucratic hurdles, and the recent tightening of visa regulations for Afghan truckers.
The decline in bilateral trade, coupled with challenges at border crossings, has prompted stakeholders to underscore the necessity for joint efforts in addressing trade barriers.
