Pakistan stands in solidarity with Japan amid earthquake

Islamabad, 2 January 2024 (WAI): The Government and people of Pakistan express profound concern and solidarity with the resilient nation of Japan in the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck off its coast yesterday. The Pakistan Embassy in Japan stated, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the affected communities, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have suffered loss and hardship.

In the face of adversity, we are confident in the resourcefulness and strength of the Japanese people. The longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Japan has weathered various challenges, and we are optimistic that Japan’s unwavering spirit will enable them to navigate this challenging time.

As a nation that has, unfortunately, experienced the devastating impact of natural disasters, particularly recalling the 2005 earthquake and the 2022 floods, Pakistan understands the immense challenges and resilience required in such situations. In this spirit of shared experience, we stand in solidarity with Japan, offering our support and assistance in any way deemed necessary.

The Government of Pakistan has complete confidence in Japan’s ability to manage and recover from this disaster effectively, and we stand ready to assist in their relief and reconstruction efforts.”

A series of powerful earthquakes, including a 7.6-magnitude quake, struck central Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture. The death toll has risen to 55, with aftershocks causing additional damage. A Japan Coast Guard aircraft collided with a passenger plane at Haneda Airport, resulting in five crew members’ deaths. Road obstructions hamper relief efforts.

Evacuations total 57,360 in Ishikawa and Niigata prefectures, with water supply disruptions in 16 cities. Rescue operations involve 1,000 Self-Defense Force officers. The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of potential strong aftershocks in the coming days.
