Islamabad, 26 August 2023 (WAI): Pakistan strongly appreciates the Danish government’s recent announcement regarding its proposal to adopt legislation against the burning and blasphemy of the Holy Quran and other sacred texts. This progressive approach to protecting sentiments related to religion is frequently welcomed as a good sign.

Pakistan continually emphasizes that defiling and burning holy scriptures are dangerous manifestations of religious hostility and should not be excused under the cover of freedom of expression, opinion, or protest. Such provocative conduct should be prohibited through proper legal mechanisms under international human rights law principles and UN Human Rights Council resolutions.

The latest incidences of desecration of the Holy Quran have gravely hurt the feelings of over 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide. These heinous acts appear to be aimed to sow discord among communities, damaging interfaith harmony and mutual respect. National governments are responsible for taking significant action to combat religious hostility, xenophobia, and Islamophobia.

Denmark’s present initiative is expected to evolve into a comprehensive law that effectively prohibits the desecration of treasured religious books. This admirable initiative is anticipated to inspire other nations to follow suit, enacting regulations banning such acts of hatred.

The Government of Pakistan also hopes that other nations will see the significance of this action and take similar steps to end such damaging and polarizing behaviors.
