Pakistan and OIC Address Rising Islamophobia Together

New York, 25 September 2023 (WAI): Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Jalil Abbas Jilani, and the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, held a significant meeting on the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) margins. The discussion focused on addressing the mounting occurrences of desecration of the Holy Quran and opposing Islamophobia, which was held against the backdrop of the growing issues facing the Muslim world.

With the Muslim community facing a growing wave of adversity, Minister Jilani emphasized the importance of OIC unity and coordinated action to address these serious concerns. He appreciated the OIC’s efforts to advance interreligious understanding, religious tolerance, and the protection of Islamic values worldwide.

Concerning the rising number of acts of Quranic desecration, Secretary-General Taha reaffirmed the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) dedication to defending the Holy Book and the civil liberties of Muslims everywhere. He commended Pakistan for continuing to voice these issues on international forums. He urged coordinated diplomatic action to stop such disrespectful behavior.

The two leaders agreed that tackling Islamophobia required a multifaceted strategy, including improved public awareness campaigns, education, and legislation to combat hate crimes. They underscored the importance of closer coordination among OIC member states in developing effective methods to address the core causes of Islamophobia and enhance intercultural understanding.
