The legendary Mela Festival, a cornerstone of Norway’s cultural landscape, celebrated its 23rd annual edition with booming echoes of cultural harmony and artistic excellence in the center of Oslo. Norwegian Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery inaugurated Mela23.
From August 18-20, 2023, the Mela Festival unfolded at the ancient Rdhusplassen, reiterating its status as Europe’s preeminent cross-genre gathering and celebration of art and cultural expressions under the theme of unity through variety.
Since its inception in 2001, the Mela Festival, which draws its name from the term ‘Mela,’ which means ‘to meet,’ has been a tribute to the power of cultural interchange. The festival has grown into a multicultural phenomenon that transcends boundaries and unifies communities to increase the influence of artists from migratory histories in Norwegian cultural life.
The Mela Festival’s eclectic program featured local and international artists working in fascinating in-house shows, highlighting its message of inclusivity. Abrar ul Haq, Saman Marvi, and Ustad Faiz Ali Faiz Khan captivated the stage with their mesmerizing performances this year as part of the festival’s celebration of the rich history of Pakistani art and music. They embodied the festival’s objective of bridging cultures through creativity.
By attending, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Norway and Iceland, Sadia Afzal Qazi, reaffirmed the profound links that unite nations through the universal language of art and emphasized the festival’s significance as a catalyst for cultural diplomacy.
