Beijing, 17 October 2023 (WAI): Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia met with his Chinese colleague Wang Yi in Beijing ahead of the Belt and Road Forum to address critical bilateral problems, including the Ukrainian crisis and the Hamas-Israel conflict.

The discussion took place ahead of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s arrival in Beijing on Tuesday as a guest of honor for the Belt and Road Forum, a gathering concerning China’s passionate global interconnectivity infrastructure program.

Wang met with his Russian counterpart Lavrov in Beijing on Monday to discuss the truce in the Israel-Hamas conflict and the need for the Security Council to help resolve the situation.

Wang Yi encouraged the United Nations Security Council to “take action, and major powers should play an active role.”

“It is imperative that a ceasefire be put in place, that the two sides be brought back to the negotiating table, and that an emergency humanitarian channel be established to prevent a greater humanitarian disaster,” he said.

Furthermore, while Moscow has denounced violence against Palestinians and Jews, Putin has regularly criticized the United States’ misguided policy, which he claims ignores the necessity for an independent Palestinian state.

According to Russia’s foreign ministry, the meeting with Wang Yi resulted in “a thorough exchange of views on a wide range of international and regional issues, including the sharply aggravated situation in the Middle East.”

Furthermore, conversations about the armed confrontation in Ukraine were brought up during Wang Yi and Lavrov’s bilateral talks. Wang Yi emphasized the need for resolving the problem through “political and diplomatic methods.”

“China appreciates President Putin’s high regard for and support for the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and welcomes the Russian side’s continued active participation,” Wang Yi said.
