Uzbekistan hosts the 16th ECO summit

Tashkent, 9 November 2023 (WAI): The Republic of Uzbekistan, on November 9, 2023, in Tashkent, hosted the 16th ECO Summit, which President Shavkat Mirziyoyev chaired.

Heads of state and government from the ECO member states—the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Türkiye and Turkmenistan—as well as the ECO Secretary General were present at the event.

The Prime Minister emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering support for and dedication to the ECO’s agenda for regional growth and development during his remarks at the summit.

Additionally, he emphasized the significance of regional development and progress among the member nations, particularly fostering connectivity, commerce, investment, transportation infrastructure development, and sustainable economic growth.

The Prime Minister continued, saying improved regional connectivity depended on the corridor-based concept of ECO. The region’s economic potential will be unlocked by the effective implementation of the Transit Transport Framework Agreement (TTFA) into initiatives like the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Rail and Road Corridor.

The Israeli Occupation Forces’ deadly and continuous assault on Gaza was also strongly denounced by the Interim Premier.

He denounced the murders of women and children as well as the targeted strikes on Gaza’s hospitals.

In line with pertinent UNSC and OIC resolutions, the prime minister advocated for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian dilemma.

In addition, the summit event addressed the situation in Afghanistan and called for more humanitarian aid to address the Afghan people’s grave socioeconomic issues.

With the growing tensions in Palestine and the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, the leaders of the Economic Community of East Africa (ECO) emphasized that the international community needed to respond with greater seriousness and effectiveness.

Moreover, at the summit, the names of the recipients of the ECO Awards were revealed in honor of their contributions to science and education.
