Washington, D.C., 18 April 2024(WAI): The United States has announced new sanctions targeting individuals and entities associated with Iran’s drone program in response to last weekend’s attack on Israel. The sanctions, coordinated with European allies, aim to punish Tehran for its aggressive actions while signaling a commitment to Israel’s security without resorting to military measures.

The Treasury Department revealed that 16 individuals and two entities linked to Iran’s Shahad-131 drone program are among the sanctions targets. These include executives of an engine manufacturer supplying the drones, companies servicing the engines, and individuals facilitating their distribution to proxy forces in the Middle East.

Additionally, the sanctions extend to five companies involved in Iran’s steel industry and three subsidiaries of an Iranian automaker. The objective is to disrupt Iran’s missile and drone capabilities while isolating the country internationally.

U.S. Vows Action Against Iran Following Israeli Attack

President Joe Biden emphasized the United States’ determination to hold Iran accountable, stating, “We will not hesitate to take all necessary action to hold you accountable.” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen underscored the economic measures as tools to impede Iran’s malign activities, promising further actions in the future.

Over the weekend, Iran launched over 300 missiles and drones toward Israel in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike that killed senior Iranian military officials. Most of the incoming projectiles were intercepted, demonstrating Israel’s military superiority with support from the United States and regional allies.

Following the attack, Biden consulted with G7 leaders to condemn the aggression and develop a diplomatic response, resulting in the imposition of new sanctions. The U.S. has urged Israel to exercise restraint to prevent escalation, emphasizing its commitment to address Iranian aggression through economic means.

Despite calls for restraint, Israel’s response remains uncertain as the country’s war cabinet convenes to deliberate on potential actions. Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. would not engage in offensive operations against Iran but would pursue economic measures instead.

Thursday’s sanctions reinforce the existing stringent regime targeting Iran. The U.S. seeks to pressure Iranian officials and industries to prevent human rights abuses and deter nuclear proliferation. Yellen did not rule out imposing sanctions on Iranian oil exports, which could impact global oil prices and relations with major buyers like China.

The United States continues to demonstrate its commitment to regional stability and security through targeted economic measures, signaling resolve against Iranian aggression while minimizing the risk of further conflict.
