Gaza, 7 December 2023 (WAI): In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the Security Council to take up its duty of pressing for an immediate ceasefire to put a stop to Israel’s brutal war in Gaza.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the Security Council to step up efforts to resolve the situation in Gaza on Wednesday by invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter.
In his letter, Guterres stated that “civilians throughout Gaza face grave danger,” noting that since Israel began its bloody Gaza campaign on October 7, tens of thousands of Palestinians—including children—have died.
Hospitals in the area have become battlefields, the UN head said, lamenting the breakdown of Gaza’s healthcare system due to Israeli assault.
According to Guterres, just 14 out of 36 hospitals are somewhat operational.
In closing, he stressed that the international community has a “responsibility to use all its influence to prevent further escalation and end this crisis.” He urged the Security Council members to take action to stop a humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
The UNSG letter was met with enthusiasm by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, which viewed his move as an “essential step” that aligns with the Security Council’s mandated responsibilities and international alerts over the circumstances in Gaza.
The Palestinian Ministry also denounced statements made by Israeli officials who purportedly supported “terrorism” to dissuade Guterres from continuously voicing concerns about the humanitarian catastrophe that is occurring in Gaza.

The Ministry pleases nations and international leaders to back Guterres’ effort and unite behind it to pressure the Security Council to carry out its duties and reach a ceasefire agreement.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry underlined its call for the international community to compel Israel to cease its deadly war in Gaza while simultaneously applauding Guterres’s latest statement.
