Brussels, 2 February (WAI): Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Jalil Abbas Jilani, participated in Belgium’s 3rd Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum. The High Representative of the European Union, Joseph Borrell, invited the Foreign Minister to the Ministerial Forum.
The meeting between Foreign Minister and EU High Representative Joseph Borrell occurred on the Ministerial Forum’s sidelines. The European Union and Pakistan sides discussed global and regional issues in the meeting. Pakistan and the European Union agreed to deepen their ties along the lines of strategic engagement in 2019.
Moreover, both officials underscored the significance of diplomacy in resolving disputes. In addition, Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani discussed ‘Mutual prosperity, Economic Resilience, and Economic Investments’ in the Ministerial Forum.
Key Points
The Foreign Minister outlined the future course of global collaborations in his comments. He underlined the following key points:
- The shared responsibility of moving away from the divided bloc politics and concept of great power competition.
- The emphasis is on close cooperation and multidisciplinary international enterprises to deal with global issues.
- He proposed a three-tier approach entailing the development of international cooperation, methods for combating climate change, and South-South cooperation.

The Forum has been summoned since 2022 to discuss the EU’s Strategy for Cooperation with countries in the Indo-Pacific. It also includes ASEAN member states. The previous two EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial forums were held in Paris in February 2022 and in Stockholm in May 2023. The European Commission Vice President and EU representative for foreign affairs, Joseph Borrell, chaired the Forum.
The Ministerial Forum included a plenary session, round table discussion, and closing remarks. The round table discussion included security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, economic resilience, and transition to green energy. It offered a way forward to dialogue and solidarity between Pakistan and the European Union. The meeting is an essential manifestation of political commitment to implementing the EU-Indo Pacific strategy.
