The 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship was won by Türkiye, who defeated China 3-1 in a historic and exciting final. The Turkish national team showed tremendous abilities, determination, and collaboration to win the championship for the first time.
This is the ultimate success for Turkish volleyball, catapulting the country to the sport’s top. The Turkish national team demonstrated prowess in a tough final match against China in Arlington, USA.
Both teams displayed their best tactics and skills during the nail-biting game. The final scores for the competition were 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, and 25-16 for Türkiye, who ultimately prevailed and left a lasting impression on the illustrious championship.
Under first-year world champion head coach Daniele Santarelli’s direction, Türkiye joined a few women’s national teams that have won the prized title. This exclusive list includes the United States, which won the first three VNLs in 2018, 2019, and 2021, and Italy, the previous year’s champions. With this triumph, Türkiye has elevated its position within the volleyball community.
The Turkish team’s success may be due to their exceptional players, each of whom contributed their distinctive qualities to the championship-winning journey. Melissa Vargas, an opposite batter, was a notable addition to the squad in 2023. The 23-year-old rising star demonstrated she was unstoppable against the competition, leading all scorers with an incredible 26 points, comprising 21 kills, three aces, and two blocks. Her key performances at critical times were essential in helping her squad win the championship.
Team captain Eda Erdem and fearsome hitter Ebrar Karakurt played critical roles in Türkiye’s victory. Erdem, who won the VNL title, was a vital member of the team’s leadership and provided 12 points in the championship game. Karakurt demonstrated her flexibility as an outside hitter by scoring 12 points, including seven kills, two aces, and three blocks. She also produced the stuff block that won the match.

The road to success for Türkiye was not without difficulties. They displayed their talent in the VNL Preliminary Phase, winning nine of 12 matches. As they moved to the Finals, the team’s performance reached new heights, with convincing victories over defending champions Italy in the quarterfinals and hosts and Olympic champions USA in the semifinals. Their labor resulted in a magnificent gold medal match versus China when they showed tenacity and tenacity to win the competition.
Team Captain Eda Erdem revealed her tremendous emotions: “I’m living a dream right now.” It doesn’t feel real, and I just can’t believe it. Since I began representing my country in 2005, countless sacrifices have been made, along with happiness and sorrow.
Although it’s been a hard road, coach Santarelli this year gave us hope that we may win the championship. She assisted us in developing and regaining our identity. We made history, and I’m proud of my team because we waited so long for it. This triumph epitomizes the players’ commitment and tenacity and represents an essential moment in Turkish volleyball history.
China also put on a solid showing throughout the tournament, but Türkiye stole the show with their championship victory. Their left-handed outside hitter, Li Yingying, was a noteworthy performer, scoring 21 points in the gold medal match with 19 kills, one ace, and one block. Yuan Xinyue, the middle blocker for the team, added 11 points to their endeavors as well. China improved from bronze medals in 2018 and 2019 with their performance in the competition, securing their best-ever result in the VNL.
