Pakistan Defeats India 5-4 in Asia Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier

Salalah, 31 August 2023 (WAI): The hockey team from Pakistan defeated India with a score of 5-4 in a thrilling match with spectators on the edge of their seats. The suspenseful game was played in Oman as part of the Asia Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifiers. Pakistan has proven its domination, taking the top spot in the standings with nine points after a successful run of three straight victories and an incredible 46 goals.

Both teams gave outstanding efforts in the match, but Pakistan emerged victorious in the tight battle. Arshad Liaquat was instrumental in Pakistan’s triumph, scoring two goals. Abdul Rehman, Zakriya Hayat, and Rana Abdul Waheed each scored to add to the delirious final score.

The President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) declared that each player would receive a well-deserved $100 prize for their exceptional performance on the field. This honor highlights the athletes’ commitment to the game and their country and is a monument to their effort and hard work.

Pakistan’s victory over India came after a strong showing against Bangladesh earlier in the competition, which ended in a convincing 15-6 win for Pakistan. Rana Abdul Waheed displayed his brilliance by scoring four goals, while Arshad Liaquat and Abdullah Ishtiaq Khan each scored three goals, assuring their team’s convincing victory.

The Pakistan hockey squad, led by Olympian Wasim Feroze and managed by Major Muhammad Shahnawaz Khan, features Abdullah Ishtiaq Khan, Ali Raza, Muhammad Abdullah, Ehtsham Aslam, Muhammad Murtaza Yaqoob, Arshad Liaquat, Zakriya Hayat, Rana Abdul Waheed Ashraf, Abdul Rehman, and Abdul Wahab.

Several well-known teams are competing in the Elite pool of the Asia Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Japan, and India. Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, China, and Indonesia comprise the Challenger pool.

As the pool matches progress, the tournament structure includes crossover matches between the bottom two Elite pool teams and the top two Challenger pool teams. The winners advance to the second round of crossover matches, facing the third and fourth-placed Elite pool teams. In the end, the winners of the dual crossovers will play the top two finishers from the Elite pool. The semi-finalists, bronze medalists, and finalists will compete in the inaugural FIH Hockey 5s World Cup Oman 2024.
