Somalian Base Attack
On Saturday, General Gordan’s military base in Mogadishu came under attack. This attack resulted in the tragic deaths of five troops who were on a training mission. The UAE Ministry of Defense announced the deaths of three Emirati and a Bahraini military officer, along with injuries to two troops. Later, one of the injured soldiers died after arriving in UAE.
Armed al-Shabab fighters ride on pickup trucks as they prepare to travel into the city, just outside the capital Mogadishu, in Somalia on Dec. 8, 2008.
Al-Qaeda-related group Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack. Over 15 years, this terrorist organization has waged a violent insurgency against Somalia’s central government and its foreign backers.
The UAE government is a strong supporter of the Somalian central government. This is evident in their bilateral agreement, where the UAE provides essential training to the Somalian armed forces.
Moreover, this arrangement involves providing crucial training and fostering a close partnership with the Somalian armed forces. Unfortunately, this group targeted the foreign troops due to this cooperation with the central government. The incident highlights the challenges faced by nations involved in supporting Somalia’s stability.
