Kandy 7 July 2023 (WAI): A significant milestone in promoting the economic empowerment of women entrepreneurs was achieved as Maj Gen (R) Umar Farooq Burki, representing the Government of Pakistan, inaugurated the Women Entrepreneurship Development Centre at the Community Peacebuilding and Welfare Centre in Kandy.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by government officials, representatives from international organizations, prominent entrepreneurs, and local community members. The event marked a historic moment in the collaborative efforts between Pakistan and Sri Lanka to uplift women entrepreneurs and foster economic growth.
The Women Entrepreneurship Development Centre aims to provide comprehensive support and resources to aspiring women entrepreneurs in the region. Equipped with state-of-the-art computers and IT equipment generously presented by the Government of Pakistan, the center will serve as a hub for innovation, skill development, and mentorship for women in business.
In his keynote address, Maj Gen (R) Umar Farooq Burki highlighted the importance of empowering women as a critical driver for sustainable economic development. He stated, “Women are the backbone of any society, and ensuring their active participation in the economic sphere is essential. By establishing this Women Entrepreneurship Development Centre, we aim to create an enabling environment where women can acquire the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to succeed in business.”

The center will offer a range of programs and services, including training workshops, mentoring programs, networking opportunities, and access to financing options. The Women Entrepreneurship Development Centre will not only provide women entrepreneurs with the necessary tools and resources. Still, it will strive to create an inclusive ecosystem fostering growth and success. It is a testament to the strong bilateral ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and their shared commitment to empowering women and promoting socio-economic development.
