The landslide hit the mountain village of Liangshui in the north-eastern part of Yunnan Province. The secluded highlands of Yunnan are prone to landslides due to steep slopes and unstable soil.

Yunnan is a far-flung and largely impoverished area of China where landslides are common. The landslide hit just before 6 am in the village of Liangshui. By 10 pm, about 500 people were evacuated from the area. At least 11 people died in a landslide and buried 47 people in freezing weather.

Beijing posted nearly 1,000 rescue workers and 200 rescue vehicles there. The Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing led group work to the site to monitor rescue works.

By citing the preliminary investigation by local experts, Xinhua state news agency said that the collapse of a steep cliff-top area prompted land sliding. According to the National Metrological Administration, much of Southern China, including Yunnan, is prone to temperatures dropping below freezing.

President Xi Jinping directed local leaders and officials to quickly increase rescue efforts and reduce causalities as much as possible. Furthermore, he also called on officials to be on high alert.

In recent months, China has experienced a series of natural disasters. The rainstorms in the southern region of Guangxi caused a mountain landslide that killed at least seven people, according to the media reports. In June, a landslide in far-flung Sichuan province killed 19 people. Moreover, a similar incident happened in Xi’an in August due to heavy rains.
