Brussels, 11 October 2023 (WAI): Important diplomatic talks held by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in Brussels with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to strengthen strategic partnerships between Morocco and the EU.
The meeting, attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, highlighted the solid relations between Morocco and the European Union. The leaders explored ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the current global landscape.
Discussions covered critical issues, including strengthening bilateral relations, regional challenges, and joint efforts for post-earthquake reconstruction. In a significant commitment, the European Union has pledged support for Morocco’s economic development and reconstruction efforts following a recent earthquake.
This joint effort underlines the EU’s determination to stand in solidarity with Morocco in need. President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her satisfaction with the ongoing cooperation between the EU and Morocco and highlighted Morocco’s fundamental role as the European Union’s leading economic and trading partner on the African continent.

Likewise, the EU is Morocco’s most important trading partner, with trade volume accounting for over 60% of total trade volume.
Discussions also addressed the situation in the region and focused on recent Hamas attacks against Israel. Both leaders underscored the importance of regional stability and security and emphasized the need for international cooperation to counter such threats.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment to promote greater cooperation between the European Union and Morocco and to establish their lasting partnership.
