Ethiopia joins inaugural BRICS meeting in Russia

Moscow, 31 January 2024(WAI): Ethiopia participates in a high-level meeting held by the Russian Federation in Moscow. Countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa participated in the comprehensive meeting.

This meeting, which commenced in Moscow, aims to focus on common goals and objectives of economic development, progress, and livelihood of nations in 2024 under the chairmanship of the Russian Federation.

This is the first time that Ethiopia is taking part in BRICS. Ethiopia is engaging and participating in the BRICS platform as a member for the first time. This shows the keen importance of Ethiopia in the BRICS platform. It will prove to be very fruitful in the achievement of development goals.

The Ethiopian delegation is headed by the Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia and Ethiopia’s BRICS Sherpa, Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, and it includes the State Minister for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ethiopia’s BRICS Sous Sherpa Ambassador Mesganu Arga.

Governor Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu gave the opening speech. In his opening remarks, he declared and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment and readiness to work closely with BRICS members to strengthen economic partnerships. This statement by Governor Mamo shows Ethiopia’s high interest in working with BRICS members.

Governor Mamo further stated that Ethiopia will actively participate in implementing the BRICS strategy for economic partnership. Governor Mamo engaged in comprehensive discussion during the BRICS meeting. He delved into the world of development. His statements show a keen interest in Ethiopia’s participation in working with BRICS members.

He stated that Ethiopia believes that membership in the BRICS will provide an opportunity to explore its potential and strength in achieving development goals. This will flourish and strengthen the economic relationship with BRICS members both at the BRICS group level. This developmental step will help bilaterally in ensuring stable and predictable market access, addressing the infrastructure finance gap, mobilizing investment, and modernizing the economy of Ethiopia.

He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to cooperative multilateralism and believes in multilateralism that is inclusive, fair, and that produces results. He further stressed Ethiopia’s interest in joining various BRICS sectorial cooperation platforms in health, education, science, agriculture, technology, energy, and climate change.
