San Francisco, 18 November 2023 (WAI): Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech titled “Meeting Challenges with Unity of Purpose to Write a New Chapter for Asia-Pacific” at the APEC CEO Summit.
Reflecting on the first APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting held 30 years ago, Xi credited it with propelling the region’s development and economic globalization, establishing it as a vital force and stabilizing factor for the world economy.
Xi emphasized the enduring commitment to open regionalism, inclusiveness, and shared best practices within the Asia-Pacific community.
We must remain dedicated to the original mission of APEC, never losing sight of the historical responsibility entrusted to us, and actively work towards revitalizing cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, he added.
He highlighted the “APEC Approach,” characterized by voluntarism, consensus-building, and incremental progress, fostering a spirit of partnership valuing harmony without uniformity and mutual assistance.
Acknowledging the current global uncertainties, Xi urged adherence to APEC’s original vision, steering clear of power struggles, and avoiding a new Cold War or divisive camps.
He emphasized collaborative efforts to respect the UN Charter’s goals and rules, promoting prosperity and stability through dialogue rather than conflict.

Xi called for continued support of open regionalism, advocating for the creation of a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, fostering increased economic interconnectivity.
China, he affirmed, remains dedicated to development with openness, enhancing market access with high standards and maintaining a market-oriented, law-based, world-class business environment.
This commitment extends to providing fair and quality services to foreign investors.
Xi reiterated China’s unchanging goal of modernization, aiming to improve the lives of its 1.4 billion citizens, which, in turn, creates a broader market and unprecedented global cooperation opportunities.
He invited the active participation of the global business community in China’s modernization journey, offering significant opportunities stemming from its high-quality development.
